You’ll often find that service dogs are able to assist with applying deep pressure to help calm a nervous system, recognize medical issues and can help reduce anxiety. Service animals are trained to meet the needs of their handler. You can get a service animal from an organization that breeds and trains animals or if you have a pet of your own, you can get them trained to be a service animal if they meet basic requirements. Getting a service animal can be costly so be sure to do research on a respectable organization that will work with your family’s needs. Some organizations offer guidance on fundraising for a service animal. But never doubt the power of adopting an animal that can be a valuable companion.

It is important to learn about service animals and the rules as well, such as:

• Look but don’t touch! Ask a handler before petting the animal.
